TARANTINO’S TOP SEVEN EXPLOITATION MOVIES…

(off the top of his head)

1. ROLLING THUNDER (1977)

  • I saw it in just about every grindhouse in Los Angeles at one time or another. It’s a great revenge movie and has one of my favorite shoot-outs at the end. It’s a great combination of both action movie and character study.

2. COFFY (1973)

  • It stars Pam Grier and is one of my favorite Blaxploitation movies. It has a violent power over an audience that’s very unique. People get swept up in it where they’re screaming for blood by the end of the movie.

3. ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 (1976)

  • It’s the perfect boy movie. Darwin Joston, who played Napoleon Wilson, is so fantastic in that movie and it’s always really sad he didn’t have a bigger career than he did.

4. THEY CALL HER ONE EYE A.K.A THRILLER (1973)

  • Its one of the roughest movies I have ever seen in my entire life and one of the only movies I could imagine someone being afraid to watch. You don’t want to see the A.I.P cut-down version. You want to get on the internet and get on some exploitation bootleg site and get one of their homemade subtitles prints out of Sweden in the Swedish language.

5. FIVE FINGERS OF DEATH A.K.A. KING BOXER (1973)

  • That’s one of the greatest kung fu movies ever. That’s up there with Coffy in terms of [being an] audience participation movie and one of the first of the kung fu movies to be released in America.

6. THE BONNIE PARKER STORY (1958) '*'A terrific gangster movie, but an A.I.P-style gangster movie which were more like juvenile delinquent movies dressed up as ‘30s gangster movies.

7. MASTER OF THE FLYING GUILLOTINE (1975)

  • Jimmy Wang Yu was the first martial arts superstar that came out of Hong Kong. More than any of the other kung fu movies, it captured the flavor of this Marvel Comics, Jack Kirby universe. I’ve seen it like 20 times.
