KHJ Boss Radio was a radio format that started in April 1965 in Los Angeles, California, headed by programming consultant Bill Drake. It featured a restricted playlist of Top 40 hits and restrained commentary by announcers. Boss Radio also featured jingles by the Johnny Mann Singers. It spread throughout the U.S., bringing high ratings to KFRC in San Francisco, WFIL in Philadelphia, KGB in San Diego, WQXI in Atlanta, WRKO in Boston, and CKLW in Windsor, Ontario. Drake and Gene Chenault brought many of their announcers from the other "Boss" stations, using them as a proving ground for talent.
