Four Rooms (DVD Review)

Four Rooms is a film where people usually get into rough arguments. Mostly, people have one favorite segment and just hate all the rest. Or they hate the movie in its entirety. I, and thus forward that's my opinion, like the movie, except for the first segment and the over-acting on Tim Roth's part. No matter how much you think this and that sucks in regard to this film, broken down its a funny film after all, with some remarkable scenes and acting. I have always considered Four Rooms as experimental, without knowing much about it beforehand. I always had the feeling that well, four directors, that can't be too good on a film. And that's exactly what the problem with Four Rooms is: The segments are too different, and the notion that it all takes place practically in real time, doesn't come across very well because the segments are seperate and not inter-cut, which would've made this film far better (maybe they should go back and re-edit it!)

That taken aside, I especially love segments two and three. The "Wrong Man" segment is such a very absurd story, that makes such great use of David Proval, in his undies. The "Misbehavers" is a showpiece of Rodriguez' talent and what you can do with just a little room, two little brats and a new years eve night. Tarantino's segment, so seemingly autobiographically titled "The Man from Hollywood", has often been critizised for its possibly improvised-looking acting and the all too much of "QT plays himself". But I like it. It's funny as hell!

Now to get to the point, I received (and thanks to Kinowelt for that) a reviewing copy of the latest German DVD release of the film, which (special features aside), just seems to be about the best version of this film I know of. (the Spanish one might be similar and it has interesting extras nobody every told me about!). They re-issued this disc now for the first time with German and English language tracks (German subtitles optional) and an anamorphic transfer that looks very good. Speaking of quality, this is actually the reason most people should get this (especially Europeans, the disc being PAL).

The audio track (English; the German I didn't much test because the dubbing is just horrible) is presented in 5.1 Dolby Digital and sounds really really good, although there is not all that much "surround" sound involved. It has audibly been cleared up and remixed and you can hear the effort. the Transfer is, as I've mentioned, a vast improvement from what you're familar with from the UK or US disc that's available. Good contrast and sharpness, vivid colors and a cleaned up print. Veeery nice job.

Although there are some extras on the disc in the form of a German trailer, some German text trivia and other information, it is not really worth mentioning. It would've been cool to have some of the "deleted scenes & making of" on the disc that is supposedly on the Spanish DVD.

To sum up, this is a great DVD for its little money, and you should defintely pick it up whether you don't own this yet or you might want to switch to something of a bit higher quality. The lack of English subtitles and/or English menus/text info might be a no-no for some, but - again aside from the Spanish DVD I can't tell you much about - this is hands-off the best disc of the film available. And I am very happy to own it, after I've sold my Region 1 dics on Ebay some time ago. Enjoy!
